東京酒吐座 (Tokyo Shoegazer) are a Japanese shoegaze/post-rock band originating from Tokyo. The band was formed in October 2010 by former Plastic Tree drummer and prolific freelancer Hiroshi Sasabuchi (ササブチヒロシ) with guitarist Kiyomi Watanabe (渡辺清美) (殻 → acid android), vocalist/guitarist Yuki (Presence of soul), guitarist Yoshitaka Sugahara (Presence of soul), and bassist the K (101A) for the purpose of performing at Sasabuchi's birthday live party at Shibuya O-WEST on October 12, 2010 as a one-off. However, the band proved popular and continued activities following that night. Their first release was a studio recording that was made the night before Hiroshi Sasabuchi's birthday concert and released as a limited demo EP. The EP, which sold out after their first few live performances, had two tracks, DEEP RAINBOW and DISTORTION LIGHTS. Around the time of the live performance held in Taiwan in October of 2011 to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of Sasabuchi's major debut and his birthday, Tokyo Shoegazer recorded a full album, Crystallize, which was released under 299 Japan Records. On January 23rd, Yellow Loveless, a Japanese shoegazer tribute to My Bloody Valentine's Loveless, included tracks by Tokyo Shoegazer. Their contributions were their renditions of Only Shallow and I Only Said. On the same day (January 23rd), they, with Lemon's Chair, also released Japan Shoegazer as only one, a split EP. Two tracks were recorded for that release: Silent Roar and Awake. On May 15th, 2013, Tokyo Shoegazer released their second album, Turnaround. By then, new member Makoto Gomi (五味 誠) (Zeppet Store) had replaced Yuki. Shortly after, on May 23rd, vocalist Ananda Jacobs joined the band. After receiving a resignment notice from the K, the band split following a final live performance on October 18th, 2013. Sasabuchi, Watanabe, and Sugahara became the core members of a new band, CQ. In late January 2019, it was announced that Tokyo Shoegazer would play a solo concert on April 1st of that same year. The show sold out and a download card single titled Revive was released on the day of the gig. Following an encore show on July 5th, Graveface Records announced a limited remastered vinyl pressing for Crystallize, which released in August. The band did an extensive tour around China from late November to early December 2019.
