“Watch Me” is ANOHNI’s critique of mass surveillance in the United States, framed as a disturbing, ironic love song to the NSA. She exposes how government monitoring becomes intimate, invasive, and normalized. “Watch Me” is a dark satire of the idea that surveillance equals safety. By turning the NSA into a voyeuristic “Daddy,” ANOHNI exposes how invasive and dehumanizing constant monitoring is—and how easily it becomes normalized under the guise of protection. Anohni Hegarty (born 24 October 1971), styled as ANOHNI, is an English singer, songwriter, and visual artist. She has presented work both as ANOHNI and as the lead singer of the band ANOHNI and the Johnsons, formerly known as Antony and the Johnsons. The lead singer and songwriter from Antony and the Johnsons has collaborated with Oneohtrix Point Never and Hudson Mohawke on her latest work. With her official name changed to ANOHNI, the album HOPELESSNESS is set to an electronic dance soundtrack with soulful vocals and direct lyrics addressing surveillance, drone warfare, and ecocide. HOPELESSNESS is a departure from the singer's recent symphonic collaborations.
