Planet Italo Disco, Vol. 10
AngeliCo was founded in 1999 by Martine and Ruben, who had a bit of a burn-out with their previous rockabilly band Sin Alley. Originally, they wanted to start a kind of country-styled band. They were joined by Axl Peleman, who had just retired his band Ashbury Faith and was bassing along with the Paranoiacs. As drummer they added Mario Goossens, from another retired band, Noordkaap. During rehearsals and songwriting, the style of the band shifted from 'country-like' to something that sounds almost entirely, but not quite, unlike Garbage. As a matter of fact, the band has always denied sounding like Garbage. This is a hint if you want to start a superband: don't sound like a band with international prestige, and stress that fact in the press very often. The first single to be released, Good About You, was a cover of a forgotten song by The Wilsons, a band of the daughters of Beach Boy Wilson Philips - maybe a relic of the surfsound of Sin Alley? The single was a great success, and AngeliCo was 'people's choice' at the Beachrock festival. The public and press loved them, and a dream came true. A new single was released, called Wrong Side of Right. The choice for the single came from the audience of Studio Brussel who preferred it above the song Matter of Time. The band decided to record an album. Universal Music released No Rest For The Wicked in October of 2000, after a successful summer tour. Unfortunately, after the release Mario left the band: he was asked to tour with Hooverphonic. AngeliCo was sad to let him go, but the band was of course very glad for Mario. He was later on replaced by Michael Schack (who has in the meantime left the band as well). The songs on No Rest For The Wicked are written largely by Ruben and Martine. Axl Peleman had joined the band to act as bass player and add some power to the band, but he didn't really want to get too involved: at the same time he was also starting his own project Camden and playing with his buddy Luc De Vos in Automatic Buffalo. But at the moment AngeliCo are looking for a new drummer and bass player, but it is certain that the band will continue: Ruben and Martine are full of ideas and energy to continue their love for playing music.
