Over The Rainbow Vol.4
at17 雁石分天 was a Hong Kong–based folktronica and Cantopop all-female band with Eman Lam and Ellen Joyce Loo. Loo and Lam met each other at a singing competition called Original Music 2000 (原音2000) held by Tom Lee Music Hong Kong , where Loo won the 3rd Prize and Lam won the 2nd Prize. They were the youngest participants. They then started performing together as a team at university campuses and other local tertiary institutions. After about a year, they were discovered by Anthony Wong Yiu Ming, the chairman of the music production company People Mountain People Sea and a renowned singer of the 90's. Lam and Loo was then signed by the company on 1 January 2002, and the group was named at17. The group was invited to Amsterdam and performed as part of the Hong Kong China Festival in 2005. Since April 2006, they have been appointed as MCs for TVB's popular weekly music show Jade Solid Gold. Their first mega concert Sing Sing Sing 2006 took place at AsiaWorld-Expo on 30 Sept 2006. Subsequently, they held a series of mini live shows Just the two of us at Shouson Theatre, Hong Hong Arts Centre from 03 to 05 Jan 2007, where they performed the songs of other artistes. The group name at17 was derived from the song “At Seventeen”, a bittersweet commentary on adolescent cruelty and teenage angst, sang by one of Lam’s favourite singers Janis Ian. Inspired by the song, a lot of at17's songs express teenage girls’ sentiments, but in a slightly optimistic way. The style of their songs has shown some influences from Janis Ian as well. On 5 August 2018, Ellen Joyce Loo was found dead near a mansion in Happy Valley, Hong Kong, after falling off from around the twentieth floor. She was 32. Loo was born in Canada on March 27, 1986 and learned classical guitar from her father at the age of nine. When she was 14, she, together with her older brother P.J. Loo, entered the musical competition Original Music 2000 (原音2000), which was held by Tom Lee Music in Hong Kong. Loo and her brother won third prize in the competition. When she was 15, Loo formed the group at17 with Eman Lam, and was signed by the music production company People Mountain People Sea. Apart from writing songs for her own group, Loo was also involved in the production and song writing of other artists' albums such as Kay Tse, Miriam Yeung and Sally Yeh. Loo came out as a lesbian at the Taiwan Music Awards in 2017. She was married to Taiwanese cinematographer Fisher Yu. Read more on Last.fm.
