Dust Bowl Sallads

Knock three times, give your password, and enter. Lucky you, you've just been allowed in to experience the musical marvel that is Bookreader. Suddenly you're aware of how it must have felt to be a member of a prohibition-era speakeasy. The trumpet blares, the bass and drums kick out feet-tappin' rhythms, and then the vocals of lead singer Bryan Atchison jump in, forcing you out of your seat and onto the dance floor. It's a bluesy Bishop-Allen, a more pop-filled tour de force than Ben Folds, and through it all is a silliness akin to that of Barenaked Ladies. Song titles like I Know Your Social Security Number, and Bryan's Daily Workout let you know that the five members of Bookreader don't take themselves too seriously. However, behind the fun and boogie-down riffs there is something more than what first meets your ears. There are smart, thoughtful lyrics that show you that behind that password-protected door, Bookreader is not just what it first appears to be. Left Handed beings with the need to make a change in our lives. This one's easy try switching from right-handed to left-handed. Maybe that doesn't seem like a big deal, but when you think about all the problems it causes, and the new perspective it gives you, it's a lot harder than it seems. The Ballerina and the Geek is a sweet love story that begins with that somewhat familiar lust between a geek and a more popular girl, and Hope is a Girl I Know gives you a taste of Bookreader's musical abilities with a longer, danceable stretch of instrumental ear candy.
