Caramell is a Swedish pop band formed in 1998, consisting of singers Malin and Katia, and producers Jorge Vasco Vasconcelo and Juha Millboy Myllylä. Jorge Vasconcelo is known for his previous work, writing songs such as La Cream's You and Dr. Alban's This Time I'm Free. After leaving Dr. Records, Jorge established his own studio in Västerås, Sweden. In November 1998, he and Juha met Malin and Katia in a karaoke bar in Stockholm, which led to the formation of Caramell. The band gained recognition with their first singles Om du var min (If You Were Mine) and a cover of Efter plugget (After School), which became popular hits in Sweden. In August 1999, Caramell released their debut album Gott och blandat, which featured several notable tracks. The song Jag ser på dig (I'm Looking at You) was released as a single in September 1999. Other songs from the album, such as Kom och ta mig (Come Take Me), Telefon (Telephone), and Vingar (Wings), also demonstrated the group's eurodance sound. Their final single under this project was the energetic Explodera. 2001 Album Release In 2001, Caramell made a comeback with a brand-new album. This album included eurodance tracks such as Vad heter du (What's Your Name), Spelar ingen roll (Doesn't Matter), and Kom håll om mig (Come Hold Me), which further solidified their place in the Swedish pop and eurodance scene. Caramelldansen Meme Caramell's song Caramelldansen achieved internet fame with a speed-up version known as Caramelldansen (Speedycake Remix). The remix became widely recognized as the background music for an animated loop featuring characters Mai and Mii from the anime Popotan performing a dance from the show's opening sequence. This internet meme, which gained significant popularity, featured two variations: one with the looped chorus and another with the full version of the song. In Japan, the remix became known as U-U-Uma Uma (ウッーウッーウマウマ(°∀°)) due to a misinterpretation of the lyrics, and it was released as a special single featuring five remixes by various artists, including Ryu*. A video accompanied the release. Caramella Girls Following the viral success of the Caramelldansen (Speedycake Remix) meme, three members of the band reunited under the name Caramella Girls. They released an album featuring sped-up versions of some of the original band's songs. The Caramella Girls continue to create original music and cover various songs, maintaining a presence in the music scene to this day. Read more on Last.fm.
