Cue is a four-piece progressive instrumental/chamber noise rock band from Austin, TX. The Houston Press has described the music as a melodic and dramatic violin/piano/guitar/bass/drum sound that often crests into mountains of orchestrated assault. Cue began as a two-piece between guitarist/bassist/keyboardist Clarke Dominick and drummer Jason Brister. In 2000, guitarist Colin Swietek, part of the San Marcos indie scene and occasional member of electro-rock group The Octopus Project (Peekaboo), moved to Austin, slept under the ping-pong table in Clarke and Jason's garage, and started playing music with them. The trio released Keep Busy, their first full-length album, in 2001. Later that year violinist Stacy Meshbane, formerly of The Tunahelpers (Mimicry) joined the band. In April 2005, the band released Bring Back My Love, their debut album as a four-piece. Cue's album and live performances have received positive reviews by the likes of Delusions of Adequacy, Tiny Mixtapes, The Village Voice, Pop Culture Press, The Austin Chronicle, The Dallas Observer, The Austin American Statesman, The Metro Pulse (Knoxville, TN), The Charlotte Observer, and more. In addition to touring the United States and performing regularly at clubs throughout Central Texas, Cue has performed in various national and international music festivals, including the 2005 CMJ music festival in New York City, the 2005 and 2006 SXSW music festivals in Austin, TX, the 2006 Wall of Sound Festival in Fort Worth, TX, and the 2006 Strategies of Beauty Experimental Music Festival in Denton, TX. Cue has also played numerous benefits for organizations including Cinematexas International Short Film Festival, TexPIRG, House the Homeless, the Eye and Ear Festival, and Meals on Wheels. Most recently, Cue has shared the stage with such bands as Nina Nastasia, Mono, Saxon Shore, The Earlies, and Casiotone for the Painfully Alone. Cue was founded in 2008 by drummer Senne Bergsma, guitarist Chris Henny and keyboard player Ronald Rote, all three of whom were studying at the Pop Academy of Rotterdam at the time. The band was later joined by bass guitarist Ron Sedee. In this line-up, Cue recorded the instrumental tracks for their first, independently-produced album Cue. This mainly instrumental progressive/fusion album closes with Doll Trap, a 15-minute piece of carnavalesque music over which a horror story is narrated by Saskia Bultman. In August, 2010 the band released their second independently-produced album, Five Steps to Happiness, a two-hour rockopera. The line-up for this cd has remained the same, with Saskia Bultman and guitarist Chris Henny taking on the vocals. Five Steps to Happiness tells the story of a boy named Tim, who, one day, finds a ticket to a magical country. The ticket has five steps written on it - the Five Steps to Happiness - which tell you how to get there. He decides to start following the steps and meets a variety of strange and unusual characters on his journey. The band members play the characters in the story, with guitarist Chris Henny taking on the role of Tim and singer Saskia Bultman taking on the role of the female lead, Ophelia. The songs, which can be described as a blend of poppy songs, long instrumental pieces and powerful guitar solo's, are linked together by rhymed bits of spoken word. On stage, the rockopera is performed in Victorian-style costumes and is set against a décor of the same style. The band is influenced by bands such as Frank Zappa, Dreamtheater, Kate Bush and Pink Floyd. The song was made for a Swedish TV-series called Glappet. The group cosists of singer Niklas Hjulström and musician Anders Melander They have made two albums: Cue in 2000 and Guide in Blue in 2006. 4.
