Devotchkas is a four-piece punk rock band from New York City, USA. Their name is derived from the novel/movie A Clockwork Orange where devotchka is the Nadsat word for girl (originally from the Russian word of the same meaning). An all-girl group, the band was formed by three friends in 1996. The early period saw drummers come and go, including Jon from The Krays. Wanting a regular drummer, they eventually recruited Gabrielle to complete the line up. In 1998 they released their first EP. Containing only four songs, it did sell 5,000 copies, a somewhat surprisingly high number. They were signed to Punkcore Records shortly after and released two more albums. Anhilitaion was their film album, the only one with Steph on vocals. The singer Stephanie left the band in 1999, being replaced by JJ. The Devotchkas briefly considered change their name to The 99's, but returned to their original name by the time of their 2001 release Live Fast, Die Young, which includes JJ on vocals.
