Ketzer is a German thrash metal band with black metal, death metal, and post-rock influences from Bergisch Gladbach. The band was formed in 2003. They released three demos before putting out their debut album Satan’s Boundaries Unchained in 2009. Their early work is occasionally compared to that of Deströyer 666, whose drummer Mersus produced the debut album Satan’s Boundaries Unchained. However, the band members themselves cite Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, and Judas Priest as their main influences. In the May 2010 issue Rock Hard magazine called Ketzer “Germany’s most talented up-and-coming band” as the headline of a full-page article. Their second album, Endzeit Metropolis, also received attention in the metal press, including a two-page spread in Rock Hard issue 299. Manuel Latton (aka inhonorus) of Legacy magazine described their 2016 album Starless, in comparison to the band’s earlier work, as more musical and experimental, though Ketzer approaches it in a slower and noticeably less aggressive manner. Long-time fans might be alienated. The band itself sees natural evolution with each new album as an essential part of their identity.
