Mother Wisdom
There are four (and probably more) artists with the same name, Kiva. 1) A Canadian overtone singer/ keyboardist, based in Prague. Also known as Kiva Simova. Kiva specializes in overtone singing. Her music is otherworldly world beat/ folk/ nu-jazz with lots of global rhythmic grooves, invoking Bobby McFerrin, Jane Siberry, Lisa Gerrard. She directs her own experimental overtone choir, AURALIA in Prague, and has two solo CDs 'The Ladder' ('98) and 'Pulse' ('05). She has appeared as a guest improvisational vocalist with Tanya Tagaq, Yellow Sisters, Jennifer Berezan, Olla Vogala orchestra, among others, and film soundtracks. She comes from a background of classical and jazz piano, with experience in numerous genres and bands, including a stint as tour member with the Crash Test Dummies in '94-'95. 2) An Improvised research/performance group formed by trombonist John Silber and the French percussionist Jean-Charles François. The research/performance group KIVA was created in 1975 by the American trombonist John Silber and the French percussionist Jean-Charles François as part of a research project at the Center for Music Experiment at the University of California San Diego. During the period of its existence (1975-91) various members (often graduate students from UCSD) joined the two permanent musicians, John Silber and Jean-Charles François, to contribute to the group’s artistic production. Two personalities had an important impact on the development of the KIVA aesthetical posture: the Korean dancer Hi-ah Park between 1978 and 1985, and the Australian pianist and composer Keith Humble between 1984 and 1991. 3) An Australian electronic music project. At times when appearing as a vocalist Royce Doherty himself is credited as 'Kiva'. They released a self-titled album in 1997, produced by Paul Mac. 4) This band called KIVA was created in May of 1989 by Ariana Lightningstorm. Their description of themselves is Using mythological stories and images, KIVA weaves a rainbow tapestry of ancient cultures and natural imagery into energizing mystical folk music for all ages. KIVA is a percussive, acoustic, worldbeat ensemble that celebrates the magic of nature and ancient bardic traditions with music that opens the heart and heals the spirit. The band blends strong vocal harmonies with rich and diverse acoustic and electric instrumentation, performing originals, traditionals, and covers. The musicians are inspired by many cultures, spiritual disciplines, and musical styles, including celtic-folk, folk-rock, blues, big band, traditional chants, and jazz. Read more on Last.fm.
