Malist is a solo black metal project created by Ovfrost. The project originated in Moscow, Russia, in 2017 as a series of home recording experiences. The artist soon developed a musical concept based on general melancholic mood of the music, minimalistic rhythm guitar-centered arrangements, with some ground for atmospheric digressions. The debut album In the Catacombs of Time was released on January 25, 2019. The lyrical concept of the album evolves around the mysterious underground Karst Realm, with the protagonist on his way to seek answers through its vast and obscure halls. Stylistically it is a mixture of melodic and atmospheric black metal, with some influences from more traditional 90's acts. The second album To Mantle the Rising Sun was released on April 24, 2020. Musically, it's a more experimental record, focusing on exploring different sub-genres of black metal, with many elements from thrash, death, prog metal, etc. The story of Karst Realm progressed further, with protagonist now travelling across the outer surface of the realm to meet the Tyrant King in hope to shed light on his being. The third album Karst Relict was released on March 12, 2021. On this album the author chose a more universal approach, blending the sound of both previous releases, yet focusing on melody instead of experimentation. This release concluded the story of Karst Realm, ending the conceptual album trilogy. 2022 saw the release of the fourth album by the Russian musician, As I Become Darkness, a release that was not meant to be part of the band’s repertoire at first, due to its intense fierceness and aggression, but was still unleashed by Ovfrost to reflect his anxieties over the tragedies of today.
