Obelija. People from the Lithuanian region of Dzūkija remember this word as meaning a forgotten garden of apple-trees. The members of the ensemble believe that the songs of the elderly - just like the old apple-trees - are beautiful and can be revived for a new life. That's why the members of the band not only learn new songs from folklore books, but also organize expeditions in order to search for even more unheard songs, write them down and revive. Feeling the greatest passion for the songs from Dzūkija region, they travel arround Dzūkija hoping to find as old songs as possible. Travelling through villages and talking with the elderly that haven't forgotten the tradition of singing, the members of Obelija are happy not only to acquire the priceless experience, but also be able to share the energy of the pure people living in the countryside. Obelija quickly fall in love with the songs learned from the elderly and add them to their repertoire with a little taste of their own uniqueness, as well as melodies played by various instruments, like kanklės, archaic drum, violin or pipe. The clothing the members of the ensemble wear represent 13-14 c. of the Great Duchy of Lithuania, with some individual interpretations. The group is also into learning archaic crafts or studying the subtleties of the culture of that time, in this way finding connections between the way of life and songs of the people in the past.
