Wie Feuer und Flamme

On July, 19th 1988 the Eastern German youth organisation FDJ arranged the "Concert for Nicaragua" in East Berlin, where Bruce Springsteen played for 160.000 people. One of the main protagonists of the event was Katarina Witt, an Eastern German figure skating star, who got booed when she was presenting the gig. This event and the fact, that the audience did sing along the chorus "Born in the USA" was the reason for Sandow to write and compose "Born In The GDR". Read more on Last.fm.

Sandow is a Cottbus based band, originating from East German underground, playing a very excentric mixture of rock, punk and avantgarde music. They took their name from a district of their home town. They became better known to a wider audience by appearing in the film Flüstern und Schreien, a documentary about some bands in End-GDR, among them Silly, Chiccoree (later Zöllner) and Feeling B. Their song Born In The GDR became very popular and some kind of anthem for the alternative East German scene (GDR - German Democratic Republic). Er ist anders (He is different) and Schweigen und Parolen (Silence and Slogans) are two other hits from the early Sandow years. After the Berlin Wall came down Sandow released several albums showing some lyrical influence by Einstürzende Neubauten. In 1998 the band quit, but in 2005 they started a short-lived comeback.
