Live At The Greyhound
One of the most enduring rock bands to come out of London's East End. This cockney quartet boasted a very loyal following and they also had a big influence on Iron Maiden (BUM) who would attend their gigs. Slowbone were an East End combo formed by Barry Hart and Jeff Peters from 60s Psych band Turquoise. They released 2 other singles at the time on Rare Earth: Happy Birthday Sweet 16 and Hot California Beach (under the name Rough Riders). They were also the backing band on the Sonny And The Sovereigns single –School Is Out. Barry Hart (vocals, guitar) Jeff Peters (bass) Keith Shepherd (drums) Jim Hunter (organ) This lineup created a lot of comparison with Deep Purple and other organ fronted rock bands of the time. Barry later changed his name to Lea Hart and the band became The Roll Ups under which name they released an album Low Dives For Highballs which contained some original pop/rock material. Most Slowbone recordings were live, recorded at pubs, the Royal Fort and the Greyhound, Fulham. They also had a single on Tamla Motown which featured Got to Know, backed with Tales of a Crooked Man.(q.v.) Tales was their finale and a driving rock instrumental where each member took a solo which their fans loved, which is why they insisted this track be recorded. An album, Live at the Greyhound was also produced, which has the tracks listed on Last. They influenced a great many musicians - Gary Moore, Iron Maiden and even Malcolm McLaren, and the similarity between Slowbone's Crooked Man logo and Iron Maiden's Eddie is no coincidence.
