Therion is a Swedish symphonic metal band founded by Christofer Johnsson in 1987. The band was originally named Blitzkrieg before adopting the name Therion, which was inspired by the album To Mega Therion by Celtic Frost. The phrase To Mega Therion is Greek for The Great Beast and is associated with the occultist Aleister Crowley. Initially performing in the death metal genre, Therion later evolved its musical style by incorporating orchestral elements such as choirs, classical musicians, and, at times, full orchestras during live performances. This transition positioned the band as a pioneer in the development of the symphonic metal genre. The lyrical content of Therion’s music often draws from a variety of sources including mythology, occultism, magical practices, and ancient traditions and texts.
