Urgehal is a Norwegian black metal band formed in Hønefoss in 1992 by lead guitarist and vocalist Trond Bråthen, known by the stage name Trondr Nefas, and rhythm guitarist Enzifer. Prior to disbanding in 2016, the group released seven full-length albums, four extended plays, and two demos. Urgehal reformed in 2022 as a tribute to past members. Urgehal’s music is influenced by the Norwegian black metal scene of the early 1990s. Guitarist Enzifer has cited the band Darkthrone as a primary influence. The band also draws from other genres such as traditional heavy metal, thrash, speed metal, death metal, and black metal, along with the South American extreme metal scene. The band is known for incorporating visual elements typical of black metal performances, including corpse paint, spiked accessories, and inverted crosses. Enzifer has been noted for wearing a distinctive mask with spikes, which he described as a symbolic representation of personal themes. Urgehal has referred to itself as a Satanic band, using the figure of Satan as a symbolic or metaphorical representation of what they describe as the darker aspects of human nature. The band's name is said to originate from Old Norse mythology, interpreted by the group as referring to a vast, dark forest associated with evil. After forming in 1992, Urgehal released two demos in 1994 and 1995. In 1996, they signed with the German label No Colours and released their debut album, Arma Christi, that same year. The second album, Massive Terrestrial Strike, followed in 1997. The band later moved to the label Flesh For Beast, releasing Atomkinder in 2001 and Through Thick Fog 'till Death in 2003. Following the closure of Flesh For Beast, their fifth album, Goatcraft Torment, was released in 2006 via Agonia Records. A 15th anniversary compilation titled The Eternal Eclipse was also issued, including rare tracks and a photo booklet documenting the band’s history. In 2007, Urgehal signed with the label Season of Mist. Although work on a new album began that year, recording was delayed due to internal issues. The album, Ikonoklast, was eventually released in 2009. Trondr Nefas passed away in May 2012 at the age of 34. According to a statement from the band, he died peacefully of natural causes in a wooded area that was meaningful to him. In addition to Urgehal, Nefas was active in several other black metal projects, including Beastcraft, Angst Skvadron, Vulture Lord, and Bloodsworn.
