A Psych Tribute to the Doors
There are at least three different artists which use the name Vietnam: 1. A rock band from Brooklyn, New York 2. A rock band from Atlanta, Georgia 3. A rapper from Baltimore, Maryland 4. A metal punk band from Osaka, Japan 5. A post-punk band from New Zealand 1. The enigmatic rock quartet VietNam of Brooklyn, NY whose mellow but acerbic music and extended jams have elicited comparisons to Lou Reed, Sonic Youth, and Smog, features vocalist/guitarist Michael Gerner, guitarist/vocalist Joshua Grubb, drummer Michael Foss, and bassist Ivan Sunshine. The group debuted with an EP The Concrete's Always Grayer on the Other Side of the Street in 2004 on Vice Records, followed by a self-titled full-length released in 2007 on Kemado Records. The group disbanded shortly following this release. Front man Michael Gerner is currently at work writing a new record under the name, An American Dream, which will be released in Fall 2012. Joshua Grubb recorded an album, Infinidelity under the name Historics alongside Maroon 5's Mickey Madden and Amazing Baby's Don Devore. Michael Foss is currently working on a project under the name CLOS.E alongside Dream Diary's Jacob Sloan. Ivan Sunshine debuted his new band, Hidden Fees with a 12 called Sale Away which featured vocals by Light Asylum's Shannon Funchess in early 2011. 2. From Southeast Performer Magazine: Vietnam started out in Atlanta in 1980, at a time when smaller, neighboring city Athens was the music city of that decade. Bands such as R.E.M., The B-52s, Pylon and Love Tractor were tearing up the clubs and getting much love from college radio. Vietnam played the same clubs and got a lot of the same type of praise that was bestowed upon the aforementioned acts, but they never cut an album. Jump ahead 25 years, and we finally have the band’s debut release Past Away. 3. Some hip hop guy named Vietnam. Yea. Read more on Last.fm.
