Vocodah is from Tulsa, Oklahoma.[1][2] He initially started beatboxing around September 2013[1] after discovering it through online game communities and having known about the Beatbox Battle World Championship beforehand. He began to seriously develop his sounds during his freshman year of high school after a friend showed him a video of Reeps One. He was an alto saxophone player in his school's band, and during band class he would often attempt to imitate his classmate's drum patterns by beatboxing.[2] He changed his name from Audical to Vocodah in 2020, citing potential copyright issues with companies of the same name as well as a desire to build a new brand.[2][3] On November 14, 2021, Vocodah announced that he had cut ties with Swissbeatbox and that all previous and upcoming videos featuring him on their channel would be removed, citing frustration with the organization's failure to engage with the community. He went on to further criticize them in the same post, stating: It's disappointing to see sheer ignorance about problems in this community from the people who run it.[4] This announcement was made in the wake of surfacing sexual assault allegations surrounding the Grand Beatbox Battle 2021 American Champion, GBB Online 2nd place, Online World Champ.
