Lawless Darkness
Watain is a Swedish black metal band formed in 1998. The group's name is derived from an early recording by the American black metal band Von. Watain is known for incorporating theistic Satanism into their artistic and lyrical themes, as well as for their theatrical and controversial live performances. These shows often feature pyrotechnics, candlelit altars, ritualistic elements, animal carcasses, and blood. One of the band's most publicized performances occurred in Brooklyn in 2014, where audience members were doused with animal blood, reportedly causing some to vomit. The incident drew media attention and controversy after being reported by TMZ. Since their inception, Watain has released seven studio albums, three live albums, and several demos and EPs. Their most recent studio album, The Agony & Ecstasy of Watain, was released on 29 April 2022 via Nuclear Blast. The band’s core lineup—Erik Danielsson, Pelle Forsberg, and Håkan Jonsson—has remained consistent since its formation, though Jonsson ceased performing live in 2015. Emil Svensson (also known as E. Forcas) from the Uppsala death metal band Degial has since served as the band’s live drummer.
