“Emily, I’m Sorry” was released within the teaser for boygenius' debut album, the record, on March 31. The song is led by Phoebe Bridgers and features backing vocals by Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus. The first demo that was sent out for the song was a week after the release of Punisher. The song is most likely about Emily Bannon, a voiceover actor and vocal artist who was rumored to be involved in a polyamorous relationship with both Phoebe and producer Chris Nelson in 2018 Read more on Last.fm.

Grammy-winning American singer-songwriters Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus record together as boygenius. Their first EP, the eponymous boygenius, was released in November 2018. On July 3, 2020, a demo EP titled boygenius (demos) was released on Bandcamp and was available for 24 hours only. The EP consisted of the June 5, 2018 demos of Bite The Hand, Me & My Dog, and Stay Down. “When we met, Lucy and Phoebe and I were in similar places in our lives and our musical endeavours, but also had similar attitudes toward music that engendered an immediate affinity”, says Baker. “Lucy and Phoebe are incredibly gifted performers, and I am a fan of their art outside of being their friends, but they are also both very wise, discerning and kind people whom I look up to in character as much as in talent. On January 18, 2023, the trio announced their debut album the record and released three singles: $20, Emily I'm Sorry, and True Blue, followed by the single Not Strong Enough on March 1. the record was released on March 31. the record was followed by their third EP, the rest, released on October 13, 2023.
