Edgar Nathaniel Sarratt III, known professionally as midwxst, is an American rapper and singer born on June 5, 2003, in Columbia, South Carolina. Raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, Sarratt grew up in a military family and faced various relocations, which instilled adaptability and resilience. He was diagnosed with ADHD at a young age, which influenced his approach to music and creativity. In high school, he began producing music in his bedroom, initially under the alias $uspect, and later adopting the stage name midwxst. midwxst first gained attention in the hyperpop community on SoundCloud, where he released a series of tracks that reflected influences from hyperpop, emo rap, trap, and pop. His 2020 single Trying, a breakout hit within the genre, led to a record deal with Simple Stupid Records, a Geffen Records imprint. That year, he also released the EPs valentine and Secrets, the latter marking his debut on major streaming platforms and featuring collaborations with notable hyperpop artists. His work from this period demonstrated a blend of genres, drawing from influences like Kanye West, Tyler, the Creator, and Frank Ocean, while incorporating elements of electronic music, hip hop, and alternative rock. Throughout 2021 and 2022, midwxst continued to build his discography with releases like SUMMER03, wxstnb, and his debut major-label EP, BACK IN ACTION, followed by better luck next time and BACK IN ACTION 3.0, which included collaborations with artists such as BabyTron and tana. In 2023, he collaborated with rapper Denzel Curry on the single Tally, which prefaced the release of his debut studio album, E3, on September 1. The album, co-executive produced by midwxst and Sophie Gray, explores themes of love, personal growth, and mental health, which are recurrent topics in his work. Known for his openness about his struggles with mental health and experiences with bullying, midwxst’s music often emphasizes themes of resilience and self-acceptance. He aims to provide a voice for listeners dealing with similar challenges, combining introspective lyrics with diverse musical styles. With E3, midwxst sought to deepen this connection with fans by crafting a concept album centered on relationships and personal transformation. As he continues his career, midwxst is recognized as one of the emerging voices from the pandemic-era hyperpop movement, known for his genre-blending approach and commitment to emotional transparency in his music.
