The sound of Spagirus could be described as being made up primarily of layered drones with an emphasis on overtone phenomena but interspersed with percussive moments and interludes of melody that all comes together to sound like the deepest core of the Earth speaking directly through you. The sound of Spagirus envelops you as if you were yourself an alienated Druid conjuring elemental forces in the deep and gnarled forests of Appalachia. Spagirus is the solo musickal work of Gregory Elliott (though he occasionally collaborates with other artists under this moniker as well, mostly for live performances). He was raised in Springfield, Tennessee, U.S., but now resides in Austin, TX, United States. Greg has been doing music almost all of his life, starting as a bass player in punk, metal, and goth rock bands then he moved into doing more experimental, dark ambient, drone, noise, and post-industrial music; which is the realm he has been working in since 1995. He has played keyboards in psych rock bands (most notably in Dreamt of By Armadillos) and done computer based experimental music (which was the foundation for the early days of Spagirus). He has also done psych and dark folk music (playing dulcimer and acoustic guitar) with the bands Anvil Salute, Gavagai, and Gabhar. But now, for his solo Spagirus work, which he started in 2002, Greg exclusively makes his aural contributions with the Appalachian dulcimer, his favorite instrument that is near and dearest to his heart as a Tennessee native. He approaches the mountain dulcimer in extremely non-conventional ways such that one could say that he plays 'prepared mountain dulcimer'. That said, he still has a great respect for traditional modes of playing this instrument, from his homeland, and manages to incorporate these more 'musical' elements into his experimental work. Spagirus has had albums released on several small, independent labels (such as Maritimefist Glee Club, Ethedrone Muzac, Anticlock Records, Palustre Records, Roil Noise, and Lo Bengo Sound). -Astar Argento of 'Sanguinamento Dom' magazine, Italy Official myspace: https://root.theworkpc.com/music/preview?img=http://www.myspace.com/spagirus Read more on Last.fm.
