Legal Drug Addict (feat. DJ Starscream) - Single

Amy Yanick, a.k.a. thekeenone (the-keen-one), is a Los Angeles-based MC from Northeast Pennsylvania and Philadelphia whose lyrical ability and raw honesty are matched only by the fire she brings to her live performances. Thekeenone, or Keen as is she also known, skillfully blends an eclectic array of musical influences to bring a wholly original sound to hip hop. A seasoned battle MC who gained a reputation in Philadelphia’s underground scene for going head-to-head with her male peers and leaving them to rethink what a female MC can really bring to the game, Keen has proven herself a force and a voice to be reckoned with. Born in Allentown, PA to a white mom whose conservative family did not approve of her having a bi-racial child, Keen was put up for adoption and raised by her white adoptive family in Northeast Pennsylvania as one of the only people of color in a rural coal mining town. She began writing poetry and stories at a young age and listening to hip hop as a way to experience a cultural connection that was absent from her upbringing. She soon realized forging a union between the two would not only provide the creative outlet she needed in the face of numerous tragedies including the deaths of teenage friends and immediate family members, but could also serve as a way to get her message out to as many people as possible. Keen’s message? The universal struggles of life, love, loss, injustice, pain, perseverance, and how we not only cope, but how we survive and overcome. At the age of 21, Keen moved to Philadelphia to pursue her dreams of making music. She hit the Philly underground scene with a realness and unmistakable talent that quickly got her noticed. At first, people would discount Keen, a petite, striking female, as just a good looking chick trying to get attention, that is until she got on the mic. This pervasive attitude of discounting and dismissal only motivated Keen to focus intently on the technique and integrity of her writing and performance so that every time she got on a stage, there would be no doubt exactly why she was there and why you should pay attention. After paying her dues and earning respect in the Philly battle scene, Keen was inspired to form the Subliminal Orphans. The Orphans were a nine piece group fronted by herself and two other MC’s, and backed by a full band. The group’s chemistry was undeniable and soon they had established themselves as a local favorite on the live music scene. The Orphans went on to tour extensively on a national level and released one album independently before they disbanded, deciding to focus on solo projects. When Keen decided to launch her solo career, she moved to Los Angeles to work with B-Real of Cypress Hill on her solo debut album, Getaway. Getaway was released in the late summer of 2009 as a free download and features B Real on rhymes and production, as well as guest spots and production from Sen Dog, Fredwreck, DJ Starscream of Slipknot, Young DE, Ill Bill, and more. In addition to being a free download, Getaway has sold hundreds of CD’s, sparked continuous sales of thekeenone merchandise, boosted her online fanbase into the tens of thousands, and has garnered critical acclaim in the indy hip hop scene. Keen recently recorded her second album, a full-length collaboration with DJ Starscream of Slipknot, expected to be released in the Summer of 2010.
