Rock 'n' roll from a nightmare future. SHLEM is a vibrant and distinctive band from Saint Petersburg, Russia, formed in 2019. Their sound is rooted in modern hardcore punk, blending elements of rock 'n' roll, danceable energy, and even black metal influences, such as tremolo picking and blast beats. Their style can be likened to a mix of bands like Motörhead, Kvelertak, Black Flag, and Dead Kennedys, creating a unique sonic cocktail that leaves listeners feeling as if they’ve woken up in a strange place after a wild night. The band’s lyrical themes revolve around cosmic and fantastical characters, including a mysterious figure known as the Helmet Bearer and the Mayan serpent god Kukulkan. These themes bring depth, irony, and a sci-fi atmosphere to their songs. Vocalist Pavel Mraček, the last member to join the band, was inspired to create these lyrical worlds after receiving a mysterious helmet from a friend who had brought it back from Eastern Europe. This helmet eventually became the band’s namesake and the foundation of their lyrical identity. SHLEM has released two albums. Their debut album established the groundwork for their cosmic universe, featuring high-quality production and an intriguing, quirky vibe that appeals to those who enjoy music that’s off the beaten path. One of the standout tracks, "Motorotsefal", serves as a tribute to Motörhead and Lemmy Kilmister, reflecting the deep influence they’ve had on SHLEM's music. Their second album presents a more cohesive narrative, delving deeper into the band’s fantastical world with well-defined characters and settings. Prior to its release, the band launched a successful crowdfunding campaign, produced merchandise, and released a stop-motion claymation music video for a track from their first album, showcasing their creativity and connection with their fanbase. Their lyrics walk a fine line between irony and storytelling, offering a captivating journey into a universe reminiscent of old science fiction magazines and retro video games. SHLEM's live shows are an energetic, slightly chaotic experience that captures their playful rebelliousness. Their music is distinctive and intriguing, deserving to be heard by a wider audience, and may just be the sound that propels them to the forefront of the rock scene. Read more on Last.fm.
