Lunachicks

Lunachicks were an American punk rock band from New York City. The band formed in 1987 and had been on hiatus since 2000, with the band reuniting in 2019. The band cited influences including the Ramones, Kiss, and the MC5. The first line up included singer Theo Kogan, guitarist Gina Volpe and bass player Sydney "Squid" Silver, whom were all friends attending the NYC Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Arts. It's said that Theo's then boyfriend, who was named Mike, played the drums on their first show, in 1988. Through Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth, who were impressed by them, they landed a record deal with UK label Blast First. Now with Becki Wreck in drums and Squid's acquaintance Sindi Benezra on rythm guitar, the now all female quintet, released a self-titled EP and their first album, "Babysitters on Acid" in 1989. Unfortunately the album was only available in Europe. The Lunachicks went on tour on 1991 with The Dictators. By 1992, due to discomfort with the production of their first album and from not earning any money from Blast First, Lunachicks released their second album, "Binge & Purge" through Safe House. Drummer Becki Wreck left the band soon after and was briefly replaced by Kate Schellenbach (Beastie Boys, Luscious Jackson) until drummer Chip England joined permanently. Read more on Last.fm.
