Phyllomedusa
Phyllomedusa is a solo project started in 2007 by a musician from Maryland, USA, who calls himself Big Frog, otherwise known as Matt Mansfield. As follows from its name, the project's imagery has a lot to do with frogs and related animals, a theme which is mirrored in the music itself, containing vocals sounding like (or in some cases, using recordings of) frog calls. While Phyllomedusa's very large discography, spanning hundreds of releases and almost twenty years, mainly consists of gorenoise (with him dubbing his specific style frognoise), harsh noise wall & goregrind, he often experiments with other genres, such as breakcore, ambient, and vaporwave. Consistent features of his sound include high levels of bass & drawn out frog call imitations for vocals. Phyllomedusa revolves around themes of hatred for humanity (and subsequently amphibian superiority), aspects of frog life, and the typical goregrind themes of pathology, gore and death. Big Frog's earlier work was more experimental and consisted of a wider variety of genres, compared to his modern output; this included more complex forms of harsh noise, as well as goregrind. Phyllomedusa gained a massive amount of popularity near the end of 2024, after Pulverize That Hoe became a trending song on TikTok, being used in thousands of videos. He's created several other projects, including Macrophagous Gilled Larvae, Toad Birth, olm, and Omphalectoicxanthopsia and runs Hypyractyv Larynx Frogquencies, which publishes all of his music & merchandise.
