Vertical is an Italian live band active in the fields of funk, afrobeat and psychedelic music. The project was born from the encounter of musicians with different backgrounds, united by their passion for groove, vintage sounds and analog recording. The group is known for the energy of its live performances, where every instrument is played on stage and contributes to a collective sound that is both engaging and suitable for listening and dancing. Their main influences range from Fela Kuti and 1970s afrobeat to American funk and the cinematic atmosphere of Italian soundtracks from the same era. Modern references include bands such as Khruangbin and Air, along with a strong connection to Italian progressive rock. Vertical combines traditional instruments with synthesizers such as the Moog, weaving horns, rhythm sections and psychedelic arrangements. All recordings are made entirely in analog, using magnetic tape to preserve the warmth and depth of the sound. Among their main works is the EP Telepathy, recorded on a Studer A80 8-track tape machine and released in 2025. It features three original tracks and three remixes by European artists from the Nu Disco and Afrohouse scenes. The songs explore themes such as human and spiritual connection (with references to the world of Fela Kuti), festive and choral funk, and slower, cinematic psychedelic landscapes.
