Electro-acoustic post-pop band Knotwilg is named after an especially gnarly tree that one often sees in the Dutch countryside. Their music resembles the atmosphere surrounding the tree in many ways, as well as that of the landscape in which it is typically rooted: sometimes romantic and melancholically musing, sometimes glitchy, folky and theatrical. The tree grows in unexpected and seemingly random directions, and sometimes it derives its beauty from being a little ugly. Knotwilg was formed by guitarist Sebastiaan Flier and singer Julie Scott, surrounded by a group of experienced and professional musicians and artists. Together they’ve written alienating, cinematic music. It is a cross-pollination between two extremes: sweet poetry pops with brutal violence against raw home-made samples of simmering coffee machines and pumping trains, accompanied by a wheezing harmonium and crystal-crisp singing saw. Melancholic songs with dark lyrics, but always full of hope.
