With a vibrant fusion of hooky melodics, heady emotions and high impact production, 1991's contemporary signature has taken him around the world, attracted over a million monthly listeners on Spotify, scored multiple Hottest Record titles on Radio 1 and led to remixes of stadium-filling electronic acts such as Supermode, Axwell and Basement Jaxx. New singles such as 'Horizon' (with Poppy Baskcomb) hint at what's to come next as 1991 hits his stride as one of the most prominent new-generation D&B headliners to have emerged in recent years. Joining the family at Polydor / Chaos, the scene is now set for the most ambitious creations and manoeuvres of his career so far. 2. 1991 is the alias of Axel Backman, an enigmatic producer based in Gothenburg, Sweden. With output on Opal Tapes and Astro:Dynamics, Backman (who also operates as MCMXCI) often straddles the threshold between ambient haze and minimalist house/techno, his music buried within thick layers of warped low-fidelity electronics. In addition to 2012's trio of formal releases (Skogen Flickan Och Flaskan, High-Tech High-Life, and the self-titled 1991), he also sporadically shares music on his YouTube, Soundcloud and Tumblr pages, albeit in a manner shrouded in secrecy and ambiguity. Backman returned to the project in 2016 with the self-released No More Dreams LP, comprised of material that, at various points over the years, been made fleetingly available on social media. 1991 is also the name of various rock-based groups including: 3. a thrash/hardcore band from Orlando, Florida, whose self-titled cassette was released in 2010 on Post*Records; 4. an alternative rock band from Detroit, Michigan, whose music can be found through their Facebook page; and a 5. pop-punk band from Bilbao, Spain, whose material can be heard on their Bandcamp page.
