VI: Flora
There are at least three artists/groups by the name Botanist: 1. Botanist is a one-man black metal project featuring avant-garde instrumentation that utilizes only vocals, drums, and hammered dulcimer. The band is based out of San Francisco, CA and was founded in 2009. In 2011 Botanist released its debut album, a 2xCD on tUMULt entitled I: The Suicide Tree / II: A Rose From the Dead. The followup, III: Doom in Bloom / Allies, was released in 2012, consisting of a disc of original material and a disc of material by friends of the band composed around the album's drum tracks. The album, as the name might suggest, also features a shift to a more doom metal-oriented style, and the first disc also introduces atmospheric keyboards to the band's sound. In his sanctuary of fantasy and wonder, which he calls the Verdant Realm, he surrounds himself with plants and flowers, finding solace in the company of the Natural world, and envisioning the destruction of man. There, seated upon his throne of Veltheimia, The Botanist awaits the day when humans will either die or kill each other off, which will allow plants to make the Earth green once again. Known for effortless wordplay, seamless lyricism and a defiance of convention, Botanist seeks to push the envelope of genre and redefine it through mixing and melding the aspects of many into one. The moniker was chosen due to their association of self-improvement, growth and character cultivation with those similar aspects present in plant life and the care of - The natural and unrestrained growth of plants, the cultivation of their best forms, and the cyclic nature of plants such as perennials. They often refer to the approach they take to music through the lens of the character Dr. Brewer from the Goosebumps story Stay Out of the Basement - Botanists often try to take the good parts of one plant, and put them into another.
