Chad Valley / Sundowning
There are at least four artists known as Cathode; (1) UK electronica act (2) Dutch Hardcore band. (3) US 1990s post-rock band. (4) A Peruvian post-rock project. (1) “Special Measures”, Cathode’s 2004 debut album (Expanding Records), mixed precision-glitch electronics and a warm melodic sensibility, gaining the judgement of “first class” from John Peel and neatly summed up by Metro as “a moody, melodic soundscape of carefully controlled clicks, beats and bleeps, producing a crescendo of beautifully blended electronic rhythms ... a sound as emotive as it is creative”. Sparkle Plenty, the second album by Cathode, is released by Expanding Records in March 2009. More information at www.cathode.org.uk and www.myspace.com/cathodeonline (2) Cathode was a hardcore band from Rijssen, The Netherlands started by Mark van de Maat (vocals), Daan Jansen (guitar), Ed(win) van Vliet (bass), Nico Nijland (guitar) & William te Morsche (drums). A demo was recorded in 2001 around when they formed. In 2003 they did a self-released LP (that was put on CD by Usina De Sangue and on tape by Insane Society entitled …A Machine That Never Falters (the music there was compared with ‘Catharsis’), and a split-7” with Sick Terror was released the following year. Nico and Mark quit in 2004-05. Marcel van Losser took over vocals and Thale Roosien started playing guitar. Later on Nico ended up playing for ‘Kriegstanz’ (with Jos Houtveen of ‘Seein' Red', Edo Schreuders & Thale Roosien of ‘The Barnhouse Effect’ and Rogier ‘Betercore’). Nowadays Mark runs the Knekelhuis label (industrial, synth, wave – together with Ron van de Kerkhof; it’s also an agency run by Thijs Hoebers) and does the vocals for ‘Black Decades’ with William te Morsche, Thale Roosien & Marcel van Losser. Nico now plays in the post-metal band Fire Walk With Us and Edwin & Daan are without projects. Read more on Last.fm.
