Eschaton
Darlingside is an American indie folk quartet based in Massachusetts, United States. The band consists of Don Mitchell (vocals, guitar, banjo), Auyon Mukharji (vocals, violin, mandolin), Harris Paseltiner (vocals, cello, guitar), and David Senft (vocals, bass). Formed at Williams College as a string rock five-piece featuring Sam Kapala (drums), the group self-produced their debut EP, EP 1, in 2010. In 2012, they released their first full-length album, Pilot Machines. After Kapala's departure in 2013, the four remaining musicians adapted their performance style to cluster around a single condenser microphone, translating their indie rock songs into folk arrangements. In 2022, Senft announced an indefinite break from touring or performing live, although he continues writing and recording with the band. Darlingside has since been joined on tour by Molly Parden (bass, vocals), Ben Burns (drums, guitar), and Deni Hlavinka (keys, vocals), who have also contributed to the group's studio recordings. Following their debut, Darlingside has put out a total of four full-length albums: Birds Say (2015), Extralife (2018), Fish Pond Fish (2020), and Everything Is Alive (2023). In addition, they have released several EPs, including Woodstock (2014) in collaboration with Heather Maloney, as well as Whippoorwill (2016) and Look Up & Fly Away (2019). Darlingside is known for their lush choral harmonies and collaborative approach to songwriting. Their musical style has been characterized as exquisitely arranged, literary-minded, baroque folk-pop by All Songs Considered, while Rolling Stone has highlighted its rich line in acoustic textures and chamber-rock dynamics.
