Crystaline Fantasy
EpicalllOfficial (born Ewan Dahlgren on September 12, 2007 in Texas, USA) is a Canadian musician, composer, and sound designer based in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada; best known for his experimental style, evolving from electronic dance music through ambient to midwest emo, taking influences from various artists such as C418, Aphex Twin and Brave Little Abacus. Dahlgren moved to Canada in 2011, along with his parents and younger sister, to be closer to relatives, among other reasons. His earliest influences were derived from artists such as Modest Mouse and Coldplay, initially adopting more Pop-Influenced style in his earliest unreleased demos, dating back to 2017, when he was 10 years old. His earliest songs were entirely instrumental, made with free MIDI interfaces downloaded from the internet. In 2020, Dahlgren created a profile on Newgrounds, where he would release songs through various EPs as they were being created, as opposed to all at once as standalone releases. His first EP, Swords Of Glass (2020) had a more trap-influenced sound, despite his general distaste for the genre. His style would quickly evolve from there, ditching the trap-esque drums on Apocalypse (2020) in favour of a more trance and synthwave-influenced sound. Then, on his To Hell And Back EP (2020), he experimented with developing a darker sound, taking some influence from harsh noise and dark ambient music. In 2021, his sound would continue to develop in an increasingly experimental direction, taking greater influence from albums like Minecraft - Volume Beta, and their more impressionism-oriented compositions on Redux. Then, on his The Call LP (2021), his style continued to evolve, taking inspirations from various movie soundtracks, developing a sound more akin to space ambient music, which also resulted in his compositions getting significantly longer. In 2022, he would take a step back from music production, releasing his Six Feet Under EP (2022) before a year-long hiatus, in which his online presence shifted towards his YouTube channel. The year after, Dahlgren would return, releasing his Crystaline Fantasy LP (2023), which took a noticeable shift towards more progressive songwriting structures, and acoustic soundscapes. This would also be the last album released under the song-by-song structure he developed on Newgrounds. In 2024, under short notice, he released his Until The Poor Spare Change LP (2024), which completely transformed his sound, shifting it away from ambient and impressionism-influenced soundscapes, instead turning his style into a more post-rock and grunge-influenced sound. He would later express in a retrospective review on Albumoftheyear that he resented this album, citing production issues and lack of coherence as the main factors for this alleged failure. In 2025, he released Midas, a single which fully embraced the new sound, sounding more characteristic of midwest emo and post-hardcore music than anything that had come before. Additionally, he released Waste Them Soundtrack (2025), which was a soundtrack for bilegod's game of the same name, incorporating various elements of dark ambient and post-industrial music, to match the game's dark, brooding atmosphere.
