There is more than one artist named Gentoo: 1) Gentoo is the electronic/ambient project of Damon Kelly. Gentoo's debut release Hyoshi appeared in 2005 on Simulacra Records. In case the song titles didn’t give it away, this is pretty dreamy, meditative music with a welcoming, earnest, heart-on-sleeve nature. The EP hints that Kelly could move in a variety of directions from here, but for now this captivating and moving EP – with its ability to sound at once minimal yet expansive and infinite – is ideal for impending laid-back summer nights. At least one song, A Million Coins, takes inspiration from Zen poetry, setting the album‘s meditative mood. Ethereal as Arovane, Gentoo‘s work is also of the earth. Synth tones on Noumena and Quip meander like a flute and koto, while the title track heralds a thunderstorm with electrical sparks and the buzz of frogs. Creek is a recollection of leaving the woods for the world, amid the claustrophobic sound of being lost inside both. Like nature‘s grandeur, Gentoo‘s sometimes heavy-handed flourishes can be overwhelming.
