Deepdown Ep
Phuturistix, otherwise known as Zed Bias and Injekta, head up the Phuture Lounge operation as label bosses and executive producers at the PL Studio. Betwee running the studio and playing a part in many of the label’s releases, somehow they still find time to maintain their reputation as the most prolific music makers around. The duo are famed for their tight beat-mastery and tough, funky, but soulful and atmospheric style. Countless aliases include Phuturistix (Locked On, Hospital Records, Inspirit Music), Maddslinky (on Sirkus Records), Daluq (with Italy’s DJ Rocca) and The Henchmen (with MC Juiceman and Simba). Zed Bias, a producer, DJ and true innovator from deep within the UK music scene, scored his first top 30 track with 'Neighbourhood’ before setting the blueprint for the darker UK Garage sound at the end of the 90s. He was asked to mix the definitive “Sound of the Pirates” compilation and at this time began to infuse a jazzier influence into his tracks. Alongside remixes for Whitney Houston, Destiny’s Child, The Streets, Kosheen and Gabrielle, Zed was instrumental in the formation of an alternative urban scene that ‘Wasn’t dependent on champagne, Versace and Moschino; A scene that was all about the music.' Soon after the Maddslinky project was signed to west London beats label Sirkus. Having remixed 'Hook And A Line' for 2Banks Of Four, the ‘Make Your Peace’ LP hit the streets mid 2002 and heralded a new direction for garage, somewhere between the west London sound and garage’s b-line dynamics. Over the years, as Phuturistix, Zed and Injekta have pioneered some seriously twisted soul music that is unmistakably British. The 'Matrix EP' and 2001's ‘Deep Down EP’ for Locked On was quite unlike any of the UKG before it and their debut album project ‘Feel It Out’ dropped in September 2003 on the much respected Hospital Records. Featuring the combined talents of Jenna G, Amma, Nicky Prince, Martin Iveson (Atjazz) Amma and the secret weapon that is MR J, it painted a bigger picture, combining the depth of soul and jazz-past with the tuff swing of broken garage beats and the odd heavyweight bassline. Several remixes followed, including a number of reworks for the Inspirit Music label. Phuturistix have now completed their second LP, “Breathe some Light.” The album features vocals from Mr J, Jenna G, Mpho Skeef, Fyza, Oezlem, Vaceo, and co-productions with Afronaut and Kaidi Tatham, AtJazz and Dharma One. Choice cuts from the LP have been remixed by the likes of Mark de Clive-Lowe, Domu and Osunlade for release on 12 later this year. From west London jazzers to the east London raves, Japanese festivals to New York clubs it seems everyone’s in tune to Phuturistix, as they continue to redefine genres with ease.
