Starset is an American alternative rock band formed in 2013 in Columbus, Ohio, by lead vocalist and Downplay former member Dustin Bates The current lineup consistst of: Dustin Bates (lead vocals, keyboards, piano, synths and guitars), Ron DeChant (bass, keyboards and backing vocals), Brock Richards (guitars and backing vocals) and Adam Gilbert (drums and percussion). They released their debut studio album, Transmissions, in 2014 with the label Razor & Tie, followed by a second studio album, Vessels, in 2017. After signing with Fearless Records in 2018, they released their third studio album, Divisions, in 2019, and their fourth studio album, HORIZONS, in 2020. As of 2024 the band is promoting a fifth, still unnamed, studio album. History Starset was founded in 2013 in Columbus, Ohio, by Dustin Bates, who was already lead vocalist, guitarist and songwriter of Downplay; Bates later involved also former Downplay bass and keyboardist Ron DeChant, Brock Richards and Adam Gilbert. The space-like concept of the band was inspired by Bates' interest in astronomy, which was fueled while acquiring his master in electrical engineering at Ohio University and his research work for the US Air Force. They released their first single, My Demons on October 24, 2013 with the label Razor & Tie. The song peaked at number 5 on Billboard US mainstream rock songs chart in 2014 and it spent 41 weeks on that chart, more than any other song in that year, gaining a huge success on streaming services such as YouTube, where the official music video received 285.4 billion views between September 2014 and November 2016. On July 8, 2014 the band released the debut album Transmissions, which debuted at number 49 on Billboard 200 charts. In order to promote the album two more singles were released: Carnivore, on October 29, 2014, and Halo, on May 4, 2015. Two songs on the album, Down with the Fallen and Dark on Me were previously recorded and released by Downplay.
