“Grounds” is a general protest song, with themes of strength in numbers and the negative consequences of the British Empire. A June 2020 NME article quotes lead singer Joe Talbot describing it as “a song that embodied self-belief, and gave us self-belief – a counter-punch to all the doubt we build up from all the noise we so easily let in”. Idles are an English post-punk band formed in Bristol, England in 2009. The success of the band’s debut EP “Welcome” did not go unnoticed and so it happened that BBC Introducing in the Southwest honoured the group as “Band of The Year” in 2012.
