“Mother“ deconstructs the term “Mother Fucker” into its literal and metaphorical meaning. Metaphorically, the singer’s mother was fucked over by a system that required her to work increasingly long hours, mostly unpaid, just to provide for her children. Literally, the singer is furious at how little empathy men can have for women over sexual assault. It’s a pervasive and complex phenomenon that makes women fear for their lives. Idles are an English post-punk band formed in Bristol, England in 2009. The success of the band’s debut EP “Welcome” did not go unnoticed and so it happened that BBC Introducing in the Southwest honoured the group as “Band of The Year” in 2012.
